i like Grim Sorrow dozing in the background in panel 4, totally not caring.

a couple reviewers said that the facial expressions in Shadoweyes weren't very good, that i needed to improve as an artist, or that the expressions didn't have a wide enough range. which stung because as hard as i am on myself about my skills, i always thought facial expressions was my one strong suit, haha. and going back over the book as i post the pages here sometimes i can maybe see why they feel that way, especially with pages like this one where Kyisha has basically the same unflinching expression in every panel, her face like a mask, unclear what she's really thinking.

the two lead characters for most of the first book are impenetrably poker-faced, but that's the whole idea, i even made a joke about it back on page 10 long before those reviewers got to the book, and i thought it was pretty clear that was intentional. or maybe even if those reviewers knew it was intentional, maybe the expressions just still weren't evocative enough, i don't know.

i thought for a little while after those two reviews that maybe they had something, maybe it was something worth looking into and trying to improve upon, that i maybe hadn't made as much improvement over the past 5 years of my professional career as i thought i had. but as i look back over what i drew, even though maybe i can see where the reviewers were coming from, i still think the expressions are great if i do say so myself!
