before writing the book, i thought a lot about what regular real life food would be available in Dranac, and both considering the logistics of this contained city-state set-up and the sort of exaggerated junk food/lowest common denominator nature of Dranac, would they really have many vegetables and healthfood stuff and vegan-friendly food like seitan available? or if they did would it be super expensive and Scout wouldn't be able to afford it (it's already pricey as hell in the real world)? or would Dranac make everyone eat fast food because it's the cheapest to produce and makes the most money? or would everyone eat some kind of nutrient chemical paste? or if they had the same foods would they have the same names, and seitan would be called something different (edit: i decided to call it wheatmeat! same thing, right)? all that stuff is cool but it seemed too alien to me or too cartoony, so i kept the things the characters eat mostly real-world, which usually seems like the best answer to questions like these, even though it might not be the most interesting for world-building.
